Seniors and Independence

Updated: Jan 31, 2018

Nine out of ten seniors over the age of 65 want to "age in place". They want to live independently in their own homes as long as possible, without giving up their freedom and independence. As seniors age, they are at higher risk for in home injuries as their balance, eyesight and flexibility are reduced by age. Seniors can keep their bodies strong and active by performing daily tasks with little assistance. These tasks include bathing, cleaning, cooking, laundry, yard work, and other chores. If your senior loved one relies on you for everything, he or she might develop poor muscle strength, balance issues, weak blood flow, and breathing difficulties. Walking from one place to another and being able to complete a task can boost your senior loved one’s strength and mobility.

When your senior loved one loses independence, he or she may feel depressed, which could lead to serious issues such as stroke or heart attack. By encouraging your senior loved one to do the things he or she can do without assistance, you are encouraging him or her to remain independent. This could boost your loved one’s mood, despite the health issues he or she faces due to aging.

Being independent at home could keep your senior loved one’s brain active and stimulated. He or she will need to think and make decisions pertaining to daily tasks such as healthy meal preparation and fun activities. Deciding what to wear may seem like a simple task, but it could help preserve your senior loved one’s memory. Making his or her own choices promotes independence, and it could prevent many age-related issues such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
